How Split Check
works
Built for the moment after dinner when nobody wants to be the person with the calculator app open. Here’s the math, in plain language.
The four steps
Step 01
Enter the bill
Type what the restaurant charged before tip. That’s the number at the bottom of the receipt, or the subtotal if you want to add tax yourself.
Step 02
Pick a tip
Tap a common percent, leave no tip, or type your own. The calculator multiplies that percent by the bill (before tax, unless you change it).
Step 03
Count the people
Plus and minus until it matches your table. We divide the grand total evenly, and leftover cents go to the first people so it still adds up.
Step 04
Pay what’s on the check
Copy or share the split. If one person ordered more, open extra options, name everyone, and type a custom amount. Everyone else splits the rest.
The math, slowly
Tip
A 20% tip on an $80 bill is $16. We multiply the bill by the percent you picked. By default we tip on the bill before tax — that’s the usual US custom. If your table tips on the after-tax total, turn that toggle off under extra options.
Tax
Tax is optional. Leave it off if the number you typed already includes tax. If you only have the pre-tax subtotal, add your local rate (or the tax line from the receipt) and we’ll fold it into the grand total.
Splitting leftover cents
$103.10 split four ways isn’t $25.775 each — cards and cash don’t work in fractions of a cent. We convert everything to cents (or the smallest unit of your currency), divide evenly, and give the leftover cents to the first people on the list so the shares still add up to the total.
Uneven orders
Open “Tax, names, rounding,” name the table, and type a custom amount next to anyone who should pay something different. Everyone you leave on Auto splits whatever is left. If the custom amounts go over the total, the check will say so.
Rounding up
Round each person up to a whole dollar when you want simpler cash. The extra isn’t lost — treat it as a little more tip.
Privacy
The calculator runs in your browser. We keep your last numbers on this device so you can pick up where you left off. Nothing about the bill is sent to a server. Sign-in is optional and isn’t required to split a check.
